Concert review: Scorpions / Tesla: Thomas & Mack Center - Las Vegas, NV (June 23, 2012)

This was our 5th and final show... and I can honestly say, it was the perfect ending to an epic adventure!!

This show was absolutely amazing. AMAZING! I had previously stated that San Diego had been my favorite show so far, but I think that award now goes to the Vegas show. Actually, I'm quite sure of it. My goodness... my goodness! Where do I even begin? I think I'll begin with the venue size. I've never been to the Thomas & Mack center before, and when I walked in, the first thing I said was, "This is it?!" To me, the place seemed tiny... maybe because we had just come from the Staples Center the night before? I don't know, but I knew it was going to have a good, high-energy crowd. The floor was packed with people, the lower level was packed with people (with maybe a few empty seats here and there), the upper level had its fair share of people...

Tesla... that was probably one of my favorite performances I've seen out of the five shows we've seen this tour... and there wasn't hardly anyone there to see it. Apparently, the tickets/internet said the show was supposed to start at 8pm? Well, they started earlier than that. I don't know the exact time they went on, but they were done by like 8:10pm? A lot of people missed them... and a lot of people were pissed that they had missed them. I don't blame them for feeling that way, Tesla killed it once AGAIN!! The majority of the people were actually on their feet and rocking out this time!! But of course, there were the few expected party poopers who sat down the entire time and looked extremely bored. Those people honestly baffle me. Tesla has been owning it night after night, nobody should be sitting down (unless you physically have to) while they are performing. Nobody. Nothing different in the set list: Cumin' Atcha Live, Edison's Medicine, Hang Tough, Heaven's Trail, Signs, Love Song, Modern Day Cowboy, and Little Suzi. I normally point out the "highlights" of the set, but for this performance, everything was a highlight. Seriously, everything. "SCHOOL OF ROCK!!!"

The Scorpions... waiting for the Scorpions was bittersweet. One of the many thoughts that were going through our heads was: 'This will be our final Scorpions show of the tour... and maybe even forever.' That's not a good thought. Not at all.
Then the intro starts... at that point, everything that's going through your head suddenly disappears, and you enter the rock zone. Everything after that is pure epicness. Honestly, "epic" is the only word I can use when describing a Scorpions concert. (My Mother probably just had a heart attack. I'm hoping she didn't. haha!) From the moment they run on stage, you know they are going to rock your face off. It was almost like watching the Staples Center performance all over again, except they had even MORE energy than they had the night before. They brought the pyro again... the massively hot and massively LOUD, pyro. I'm glad I had ear plugs this time, because I probably would've suffered from another round of hearing loss, especially from where we were standing. Once again, the guys were full of smiles. You can tell they are truly grateful and thankful for their fans. Sparkles did not leave their eyes for the entire concert (well, I could only see Matthias', Klaus' and Pawel's eyes. Rudolf wears sunglasses). Matthias is SO happy. Genuinely happy. I know I said it in my previous blog, but he is seriously the happiest one up there... his happiness lights up the place. And Rudolf... does that man ever slow down? I want his energy... he is absolutely crazy!
Nothing new in the set list... they left out "Rhythm of Love" and kept the 4 ballads in a row thing. Normally, I would gripe a little about this, but the entire show was perfection... and for this particular show and this particular crowd, 4 ballads in a row worked. No complaints here.

In my previous blog (Staples Center) I gushed a lot about the energy and emotion from the crowd. Well, I need to do that again with this crowd. Like I said, this venue is rather small... this show felt somewhat intimate. I was able to see a lot more of the crowd this time, and this crowd almost mirrored the Staples Center crowd from the night before... only it was a much smaller crowd. That right there should tell you something. Everyone was rocking out to every song.... singing every lyric (or attempting to)... dancing... all of this without a care in the world. The energy in that place was ridiculous!! I love emotionally-charged rock concerts... it brings a strong sense of unity. And again, the Scorpions felt it. During the ballad portion, there wasn't a dry eye in that crowd... at least from what I could see (couldn't see much of the upper 200 level.) Men and women... bawling their eyes out... mostly during "Wind of Change", "Send Me An Angel", and "The Best Is Yet to Come"... that was a very powerful moment. You could feel the love in that venue. People don't want them to retire... they don't want them to go away... and again, it showed. Matthias full-out cried, too... right after "The Best Is Yet to Come"... and I don't just mean watery eyes, again. I'm talking tears running down his face with a quivering lip... that pretty much killed my mother and I. He also cried after "Big City Nights"... again, that killed us. The thought of it being the last time we'll ever get to see them, kicked in again... but that still didn't stop us or anyone else from rocking out. The block of "Raised on Rock", "Tease me Please Me", and "Hit Between the Eyes" right after the ballad moment is absolutely bad ass. It lifts you back up again, and you just go completely nuts. The drum solo... "Kottak Attack"... I think I've finally become immune to it? I can almost completely block that out now. At this point, I just try and focus on the albums that appear on the video screens...
Look at that face.

The final update on the "Pawel constipation face game": the Gene Simmons complex that he had developed at the Staples Center wore off 4 songs into the show. He's back doing his try-hard 'rock n roll' face... the only face he knows how to make. All you can do is laugh and shake your head, it's obviously here to stay.

I am SO glad we went to this show. This was seriously one of the greatest shows I have ever been to!! This was our last show... and in my eyes, the Scorpions are going out with a BANG!! They should honestly reconsider the whole 'retirement' thing... they don't need to retire. Not yet.
Everything about that night was absolutely amazing. Thank you, Scorpions.

I'm going to end this blog a little differently than usual. I'd like to give a massive shout out to the Scorpions' road crew. Without those guys, none of this would even be possible. They don't get nearly enough credit for what they do... I think a lot more people should acknowledge them and the work that they do... soooo, thank you!! Thank you for all that you do, sCREWpions!! They are truly an amazing group of people, and it's always a blast hanging out with those guys!!!

Concert review: Scorpions / Tesla: Staples Center - Los Angeles, CA (June 22, 2012)

This was our 4th show of the tour, and I swear both sets keep getting better and better!

Tesla kicked ass... again!! But they started late... again. And they had to cut one or two songs from the set... again. But no complaining here! They are bringing it!! From the guitar solo intro to the very last song, these guys are kicking ass and taking names. They've been surprising a lot of people (I hear things from people in the crowd)... they're blowing minds. This is honestly the best I've ever seen them. This tour is seriously the total package: a kick ass opening band, and a beyond kick ass headliner... that's a very rare combination these days.
The set list hasn't really changed... it's pretty much the same songs I've been posting. Here's what they played: Cumin' Atcha Live, Edison's Medicine, Hang Tough, Heaven's Trail, Signs, Love Song, Modern Day Cowboy, and Little Suzi. The highlights still being "Hang Tough", "Heaven's Trail, "Love Song", and "Little Suzi".

Scorpions... THEY HAD PYRO!!!! Massively hot, and massively LOUD (almost deafening), pyro!! They've been full of energy since this tour has started, but this show was just freaking crazy!!! Everything was bigger, better, and louder... it was L.A... it had to be!! They set out to impress. And impress, they did. They've been bringing it night after night, but they brought it 50 times more for this one. They had a lot more crowd interaction, more rounds of drum stick throwing, and more interaction onstage with each other. Matthias Jabs was all over it, even more than usual. You can clearly tell that he lives for this stuff. He is so full of energy... full of smiles... he has a BLAST on that stage. He's the happiest one up there. I'm not saying that he's the only happy Scorpion, because that isn't the case... I'm just saying that out of all of them, it's clearly obvious that he has the most fun up there. It's exciting to watch!
Once again, they were flawless... well, there were a few minor imperfections... but not enough to 'ruin' anything or make a fuss over. Klaus' voice cracked a couple of times, but I know a few members were nervous before the show started, so that could've been the reason? But again, it wasn't really anything major. On my end, it was still flawless. Absolutely flawless. My only gripe was the dang fog/smoke machine... too much, way too much. Saying this show was 'badass' would be an understatement... my mind is still blown.
The set list... they played 21 songs (nothing was taken out)!!! They kept "Rhythm of Love" in the set AND played all 5 ballads... which didn't serve as a crowd killer this time around. The drum solo didn't serve as a crowd killer, either... haha! Aaaaand people actually went nuts over "Is There Anybody There?"... I saw a few people actually cry when they started playing that song.

Set list

In fact, I need to gush over the crowd, and give them massive props. The crowd at  this show, was a TRUE rock crowd. This crowd was probably the BEST crowd I've ever seen at a rock show. The energy in that building was absolutely ridiculous!!! We were told that there were 12,000 people in attendance, but I would say more like 18,000 at least. The Staples Center was PACKED with people... there were people EVERYWHERE!!! I saw very few empty seats... and if there were empty seats, they were way up top in the 300 level. The crowd was loud... LOUD!!! Louder than the band, at times. If the pyro didn't make you deaf, the crowd sure in the heck did!! Holy crap!! Everyone in attendance was singing along, dancing, rocking out... and a LOT of them were crying. This crowd was emotional... and I think that helped set the tone. I saw a few people start to cry when they played "Make It Real" and "The Zoo"... but it was mostly during the ballad portion. "Wind of Change", "Send Me An Angel", and "The Best Is Yet to Come" bring out the waterworks... that is one of the things I've noticed since the start of the tour. I hadn't shed a tear since the Shoreline show... but seeing so many people cry that night, made me cry again... but I'm good at covering that stuff up (or at least I like to think I am?). And seeing my Mother cry? You can't help but lose it, too. I know how much the Scorpions mean to these people, especially to my Mother... and that was probably the saddest thing I've witnessed on this tour so far. People don't want these guys to retire... and it truly showed that night. Matthias wept a little, too. After "The Best Is Yet to Come"... I'm tellin' ya... it was a highly emotional show. And it was simply fantastic. I'm glad we were there.
This has become somewhat depressing, so why don't we get to a little humor? Here's an update on the "Pawel constipation face game": I found out after the concert, that about mid-way through the set, he was told to stop making his ridiculous 'rock star' face, and that he needed to find a new one. I'm serious... I'm not going to say who told him to stop, but I seriously want to thank that person... haha! After being told that, he came up with a new face... he now thinks he's Gene Simmons. He stuck out his tongue every chance he got... he might as well spit blood now, too. So there might be  2 "Pawel drinking games" that you can now play... or better yet, combine both games and double your fun!!
Go see the Scorpions when they come to, or close to, your town... you won't regret it!!! You'll only regret it if you don't!!!!

Concert review: Scorpions/Tesla: Valley View Center Arena - San Diego, CA (June 20th, 2012)

Soooo this was my 3rd time seeing  them on this tour... and I must say, this show was, by far, my favorite!!!  Too many random people backstage at this show, but that didn't even matter...  the randomness was actually kind of  funny. We ("we" being my Mother and I) got to watch the  show from side stage again!!! We haven't watched from side stage since their last tour. The view was KILLER!!! Matthias' side, in front of the barricade from almost a diagonal angle... we got some pretty kick ass pictures this time!!! Unlike my previous blogs, I'm going to share a few of  those pictures. But let's get to the review!

Tesla KILLED it again!!!! They went out and rocked that stage!!!! Yet again, there were far too many people sitting down during their performance. I know the doors opened about 30 minutes later than they were supposed to, people were probably tired of standing outside waiting for them to open, but still. Again, when Tesla is on stage, you STAND. When they're on stage kicking ass, you STAND. That should be a rule or something... no, it should be a given. Come on now!!! Okay, so the first show of the tour, they played 8 songs... and have since averaged about 9 songs per show. Well, they're back playing 8 again, or at least that was the case for this show. Maybe because they had to  start a bit late? I don't know? But when I saw the set list, I saw that it said "Mama's Fool"... and I went nuts. I love that song, it's one of my fave Tesla tunes!!! From what I've heard they've been alternating that one in the mix every other show. Unfortunately, however, they didn't end up playing it. I went nuts, but not in a good way :( The highlights of their set are still "Heaven's Trail", "Hang Tough", "Love Song", and "Little Suzi". I really wish they'd put "What You Give" in their set... I really, really, wish they would!!

Here's the set list :)

The Scorpions... ah, yes, the Scorpions. I've mentioned that this was my favorite show so far, yes? Well, only because it was!!! They were FULL of energy, more so than before, and they sounded absolutely amazing!!!! Rudolf was running all over the place, Matthias was running all over the place, doing more kicks/jump kicks and spins as he normally would... Klaus was rocking hard... running around, and was full of smiles. Pawel was nuts. Seriously, he was crazy. He's the king of stupid, try-hard, "rock star" faces. The people in the front row on Matthias' side got it the most... and the people in the VIP/passes section. It actually became annoying... really, really, annoying. Actually, obnoxious is more like it. It was like dude, we get it, now stop. Please. Oh, and if you've read my other reviews, if you were to play the "constipation face" drinking game, you would've been drunk by the 2nd song ("Make It Real")... I'm not kidding. haha! Klaus threw out like three rounds of drum sticks, and people went berzerk over trying to catch them... people were pushing people out of the way, and trying to grab it out of their hands. Same with trying to catch guitar picks. Oh, and not to mention a fight broke out near the front of the stage... it crashed through the front side barricade, and almost knocked me and the people around me over. Drunken, grown men over 40 fighting at a rock  concert... ooooh, so bad ass. Not.
There's been a bit of a change in the set list since the beginning of the tour... when the tour started out, they had 5  ballads, 4 of which were right in a row. Well,  after about the  2nd or 3rd show, they've changed it up a bit. I've stated before that they intended to perform "Rhythm of Love" since the tour opener, but it didn't happen. Well, now it's happened. Every other night, they add "Rhythm of Love " into the mix... however, by adding that, they'd take out "The Best Is Yet To Come." Really, I'm not joking. Now, I've said that they needed to take out at least one ballad... but not that one. That song NEEDS to be in the set list, it just needs to be. It's one of the highlights. For this show, however, they  played BOTH "Rhythm" AND "BEST"... YES!!!!  They nixed "Send Me An Angel" from the list... the flow and energy increased greatly because of that. I'm not saying 'Angel' is a bad song, because it isn't... rock fans just don't want  5  ballads at a rock show, let alone 4 in a row.

Set list: (courtesy of Malte Krug) :)

The show was SO fantastic, energy-driven, and just incredibly bad ass, that the drum solo didn't even  bother me this time. It didn't even seem like it lasted forever. The highlights of the set? Everything!!!
I'm repeating myself, and I don't mind... if you have the chance, and they're coming near your town, GO SEE THEM. GO!!! This tour KICKS ASS!!!

Concert review: Scorpions / Tesla: Shoreline Amphitheatre - Mountain View, CA (June 9, 2012)

If you haven't read the Reno review yet Scorpions/Tesla concert review: Reno, NV (June 8, 2012), read it before you read this one, if you don't, you'll be lost!

TESLA PLAYED 2 MORE SONGS!!!

But I can only remember one of them... haha! Again,I would've taken a picture of their set list, but Tesla's crew people were a tad grumpier at this show. I could also say a few things about a certain Tesla member, but I won't. He isn't worth my time or rant. But I will say this: the next time you walk on stage, I hope you fall flat on your ass, buddy. The set list from memory:
Cumin' Atcha Live
Edison's Medicine
*I Wanna Live*
Hang Tough
Heaven's Trail
Signs
Love Song
Modern Day Cowboy
Little Suzi
Tesla had great onstage chemistry. They totally killed it, again, even though I was pissed right around the time "Heaven's Trail" came on. But I won't get into that. The crowd, however, was boring. Well, the majority of the crowd was. Tesla is playing... why are you SITTING DOWN???? Seriously, why??? You stand for Tesla... especially when they're kicking ass. You stand. Dave Rude KNEW he had the ladies (and gents) at this show. The boy was working it. WORKING IT. I still don't know what's up with their sound person, but he was a tad more alert than he was in Reno... or maybe because it was an outside venue? The vocal volume almost remained consistent... it made my ears happy. I appreciate that. But again, their set was way too short. I'd be happy with at least 12 songs. Maybe if these shows would start on time, they'd get a few extra songs in...

  Scorpions... did someone say SCORPIONS???
Guess what??? SAME set list as the night before. Yeah, I'm big on set lists... haha! Same songs, same order... but they had twice (if not more!) energy than they did the night before. Probably because the Shoreline crowd had more energy than the Reno crowd... they both fed off each other. Also, I think outside venues are just better? 13,000+ fans showed up that night to rock out with the Scorps... and you could feel the energy from every single one of them.
A LOT more people used the 4 song ballad moment to go get more beer and/or use the potty room... I can understand that, but again, their loss. You NEED to be in your seats during "Wind Of Change" and "The Best Is Yet to Come". "Send Me an Angel" and "Holiday"? Not so much... especially, "Holiday"... Scorpions, I dig you, I really do, but no. I think that's why the concert feels like it goes by so quickly. It starts off rockin'... then has the slow, drawn out, ballad moment... then redeems itself by playing "Raised on Rock" and "Tease Me, Please Me", only to be followed by that atrocious drum solo. I should probably mention that James completely went past his time on that dang thing. He totally ignored the sound/video people when they told him to wrap that crap up. He kept going, and going, and going... for freaking EVER. Dude, no. Stop. It shouldn't be more than 5 minutes, tops. I'm sorry, but it does absolutely nothing for me. It just doesn't. Everything else, however, does everything for me!
But going back to the crowd, I liked what I saw. THAT was a rock'n'roll crowd. People were dancing/having a good time (actually dancing, and not trying to act like skanky-ass strippers), headbanging, and just genuinely rocking out without a care in the world. The Scorpions saw that, felt that, and fed off it. Kudos to everyone in attendance.
Again, if they're coming anywhere near you, GO SEE THEM. GOOOOOOO!!!!!! Freaking badass!!!

If you haven't read my previous blog, here's the set list:
Intro, Sting In The Tail, Make It Real, Is There Anybody There?, The Zoo, Coast to Coast, Loving You Sunday Morning, Wind of Change, The Best Is Yet to Come, Send Me An Angel, Holiday, Raised on Rock, Tease Me Please Me, Hit Between The Eyes, Kottak Attack (Drum solo), Black Out, Six String Sting (Matthias solo), Big City Nights, Still Loving You, No One Like You, Rock You Like a Hurricane.

Peace, Love, & Music,
Lizzy Lepp

P.S.- DO THEY REALLY HAVE TO RETIRE???????

Concert review: Scorpions / Tesla: Reno Events Center - Reno, NV (June 8, 2012)

Yes, I know, the concert was ten days ago... but here it goes!

Tesla ruled... and I'm SO glad they did! You can ask anyone, I was a bit worried... I had my reasons. Tesla only played 8 songs. Yes, 8 songs. Such a tease! Earlier in the day, Jeff Keith (lead singer of Tesla) told us that  going into this tour (it was in the contract), they knew they would only get 8 songs for this show... that this was a "special" show. We got to watch them sound check, and I knew right then and there, that they were going to rock. I have seen them a few times prior to this, and their performances were hit and miss... and I can honestly say that this show was a HIT! Dave Rude. The end. I'm just kidding... no I'm not... okay, well, only slightly kidding. That man has stage presence unlike anything or anyone I have ever seen. If you watch him for too long, you'll seriously faint. He captivates men too, as I saw some guys in the audience also stare at him in awe. *cough BEAST cough* Frank Hannon shredded, as usual. That man is perfection. Jeff Keith brought his 'A' game. Crisp, clean vocals, he sang all the words... he completely owned that stage! My only gripe was their sound guy... I don't know why, but midway through their sets, the vocals become louder than the music, and Mr. Keith sounds like a chipmunk. That irritates the hell out of me, and it doesn't make my ears happy. The set list... why didn't I take a picture of the set list?!?! Oh, that's right... probably because a few members of their road crew need to lighten up a bit. Yeah, I said it. Any time you go anywhere near their crates and stuff backstage, they give you the stare down. I guess they have to, to a point... but when it's obvious that you aren't a threat, they should leave you alone. Period.  Out of those 8 songs, they pretty much played their "hits"... or singles, I should say? "Cumin' Atcha Live", "Signs", "Modern Day Cowboy", "Heaven's Trail" (my favorite!), "Little Suzi" (another favorite!), "Love Song", "Hang Tough" and "Edison's Medicine". By golly, that's 8! ... but they're not in order. Again, such a tease! I wanted more... and I'm pretty sure other people in the crowd wanted more too!!

SCORPIONS. SCORPIONS... DO THEY REALLY HAVE TO RETIRE?!?!?!       The show starts with an intro... fully equipped with video screens. The intro isn't too spectacular, but it gets you ready, and it gets your blood pumping... you know they're about to come onto the stage! And when they come onto the stage, BOOM!!! They will rock your face off. Hot damn. "Bang bang rock with the gang... bang bang rock with the gang... hail hail a sting in the tail". Mhm they open up the show with "Sting in the Tail"... let me tell you now, at that point, you're not just getting stung in the tail. After every song, I kept muttering, "They don't need to retire..." Maybe emotionally and physically they do, but these dudes STILL have it. They still kick people's asses, and they know it. Rudolf is still full of energy... I don't know how he does it? For a man his age, that's pretty darn impressive. Matthias still shreds... and continues to make women (of all ages) want to throw their panties (and whatever else) on stage. How is he almost 57?? Seriously... how? I don't believe it. I don't. Homeboy looks like he's 35... at least. Klaus... Klaus is just as adorable as ever... and still has the pipes that put everyone else to shame. He might not sound like he did 30, or even 20 years ago... but he still kicks your ass. Pawel... he still has that one onstage facial expression. That would make a really fun drinking game... every time he gives the constipated look, drink one up!

Set list? Don't mind if I do! It's pretty much the same generic U.S. set list... give or take a few songs. Oh, oh! They've added 2 rare gems to the set! (and by rare, I mean songs that don't normally get played in this country.)

 Intro
Sting In the Tail
Make It Real
Is There Anybody There?
The Zoo
Coast to Coast
Loving You Sunday Morning
Wind Of Change
The Best Is Yet to Come
Send Me An Angel
Holiday
Raised On Rock
Tease Me, Please Me
Hit Between the Eyes
Kottak Attack (Drum solo)
Black Out
Six String Sting (Matthias solo)
Big City Nights
Still Loving You
No One Like You
Rock You Like A Hurricane

Soooo did you recognize the 2 gems?? If you didn't... "Is There Anybody There?" and "Hit Between the Eyes". People went nuts for "Anybody"!! But not so much for "Hit"... shame on them. I even heard one guy say, "What album is this song from?" Dude. *face palm*
And yes, you see correctly... 5 ballads in the set. 5. I know. And 4 of them RIGHT IN A ROW. Again, I know. That's pretty much my only gripe... having 4 ballads in a row is a total crowd killer. That's when people go to the restroom and/or go get more beers. Which is a shame... because they end up missing "The Best is Yet to Come"... and people need to be in their seats when that song is being played... be sure you have a tissue or 2 with you, because you will weep. I guarantee it... if you don't, there's something wrong with you. Another thing that has to GO, is that damn drum solo. Yes, drummers, feel free to throw tomatoes at me... until you actually experience it for yourself. The thing drags on, and onnnnn. And they're still using the same video footage from 2 years ago, which features James Kottak and his EX-wife recreating different Scorpions album covers. Ha. That's gotta make him feel real good. Although, I will say this, the drum solo at this show wasn't as long as the others I've seen... thank god. But other than that, flawless. Absolutely flawless.  They started this tour off with a BANG! They kick ass and take names. The show seems like it goes by incredibly fast... but like they say, 'time flies when you're having fun'... and Scorpions shows are nothing but fun! I can't stress this enough: If they're in your area this summer, GO SEE THEM. GOOOOOOOO!!!!!!

Peace, Love, & Music,
Lizzy Lepp

One more week until the Scorpions ROCK America!!!

Have you bought your tickets yet?!?!?!

If you have, good job! If you haven't, what are you waiting for??? Yes, some of the ticket prices are a bit high, but they're still the cheapest prices, compared to some of other tours that will be taking place this summer. Also, the Scorpions are one of the few bands touring this summer who actually still "have it." The bill might not be as huge as a KISS/Motley Crue or Aerosmith/Cheap Trick tour combo... but I guarantee, "The Final Sting" tour with Scorpions/Tesla will blow those other tours away. I repeat, the Scorps still HAVE IT. I can't say the same for some of the other big-name bands touring... except for Def Leppard and Cheap Trick... everyone else needs to take a seat. I'm not bias, I just know a good great live band when I see/hear one. I also know the economy sucks right now, and there's no reason to waste good money on mediocre concerts. The Scorpions kick ass and will not disappoint! If they're coming around to your neck of the woods, go see them... they will rock you like a hurricane ;)
